Who we are
The British Business Association Morocco (BBAM) is a Moroccan registered not for profit association for anglophone companies and individuals who do business, live or work in the country.
Where do we come from?
Our members are not just British but come from all over the world.
What brings us together?
We are united by our commitment to our host country, Morocco. We share information, network and socialize together in our preferred common language of English, and pool our resources to give back to the Moroccan community.
Do we profit financially from this? (No)
You can see a copy of our Constitution here. No member, or anyone on the committee, can profit financially from membership fees or other monies paid to the association.
What do we do with the money?
30% of our membership fees are used as seed money for our charitable activities. The rest is used to pay for our social and cultural activities, as well as the maintenance of our website.
Who’s responsible for the association?
The association has three official officers who are elected every three years, usually during our AGM in January. These officers, the Chairperson, General Secretary and Treasurer, serve as our committee on a volunteer basis without renumeration.
Who can represent the association?
Any member can stand for election but for legal reasons they must be a Moroccan resident and have a valid Carte de Séjour.
What’s our link to the British Moroccan Society?
The BBA is loosely affiliated with the British Moroccan Society and our members are welcome to attend each other’s events. We also cooperate on some of our other activities.
When do we meet?
We hold our regular monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of every month, except during August, at a venue in the Gueliz, Marrakech.
What do we do in meetings?
After each meeting we usually hold a short seminar on a subject of interest and practical use to our members. Subjects covered in previous seminars have included personal and business tax in Morocco, CNSS and Moroccan pensions, healthy nutrition and training staff in the hospitality industry.
What about social events?
We also organise social and cultural events throughout the year, which provide opportunities for our members to meet and network together.
These events may take place at local restaurant or at member’s private house and they often have a special guest speaker, such as an international author presenting their new book or it may include a short intimate musical concert.
At past events we have hosted the authors Richard Hamilton, Alice Morrison, Saeida Rouass and Tahir Shah.
How do we support the community?
BBA members, Alan Keohane and James Wix, along with Edward Lyle, created the WhatsApp group Covid-19 Marrakech on the 15th March 2020 as a means of offering support to anglophone residents and tourists in Morocco during the Coronavirus crisis. You can see further examples of our member’s personal initiatives on our Charitable Activities page.
What other activities are there?
We are currently working, with the British Moroccan Society, to organise Marrakech’s first English language book festival in November 2021. You can check out our calendar
